Now think of it: Spring check for mulchers

Now it's finally time again. The temperatures are rising, the grass is growing ... and it's time for the first mowing this year.

In particular, mowers and flail mulchers should be checked thoroughly before they are used for the first time after a long winter break so that there are no unpleasant surprises on the meadow afterwards.

1. Please provide each lubrication point with sufficient grease. All ball bearings (unless closed on both sides and with a "lifelong one-time filling") should withstand two to three blows from the grease gun. Caution: only press with the grease gun until you feel a clear resistance so as not to damage seals, oil seals, etc.
2. Check the transmission for oil level. Usually you unscrew the filler screw / vent screw for this. If there is no dipstick, look into the filler opening (flashlight). You will then see a bare wave that hopefully should just be covered with oil. Then the gearbox would be a bit more than half full, which is absolutely sufficient. Otherwise there is a risk that the oil will come through the vent screw during prolonged operation. If you have to refill something, we recommend a viscous gear oil (e.g. SAE 80W), which you can easily purchase in our online shop.
3. Some mulchers are designed so that from the gearbox a tube with an internal shaft reaches to the V-belt pulley. Often there is a large allen screw on the pipe. Please do not fill in any gear oil here but "fluid grease" or press fat from your grease gun. 2 - 3 hits are enough.
4. Please check the V-belt tension. For this I already have a blog entry.
5. Look closely at the knives or mallets.  Are they stuck? Check screws! Are the brackets damaged? What do the knives look like ... .. Please check for damage! IIn particular with the Schlegelmulcher one notices in the enterprise immediately, if a Schlegel is roughly damaged or missing completely, because the resulting "imbalance" of the Schlegelwelle causes a vibration, which ensures within the shortest time that your device substantial damage to the outer skin or the Schlegelwellenlager takes. 6. A general visual inspection of the outer skin and lamellae, Rubbers, etc. for damage as well as a check of all screws for correct fit is self-evident. Due to the operation of the devices and the resulting material movements on the outer skin, it is normal that screw can loosen despite screw locking. Here is a close look so absolutely your safety.
7. When attaching to your tractor, carefully check the three-point hitch and in particular check the bolts and chocks. Also, the propeller shaft safely tolerates a little fat at the universal joints.
